Mission Statement Clear - Concise - Captivating
A Mission Statement is like an elevator speech. It is clear, concise, captivating. It defines you and the life you are determined to create. An elevator speech is an analogy describing how a sales professional would, in the time it would take an elevator to go ten floors, answer the question "What do you do?" It would be like someone asking you "What is your life purpose?" An example of an elevator speech would be, "I'm in the people business providing quality sales and personal development solutions for professionals like you while complimenting your budget and lifestyle." Short. To-the-point. Delivered with sincerity and energy - but not overdone. Your Life Purpose Statement is exactly that. It is a summary of who you are, who you are becoming, who you will be. It is a couple of lines summarizing how you choose to embrace life. It is a direct measure of Values - your life priorities; Vision - a word picture describing why these Values; and Validation - how you will know you are in line with your life priorities. Why do sales champions have a personal life statement? Earl Nightingale summed it up best, "People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It's as simple as that." Your statement is indeed the guiding light to a brilliant life. It is the summation of your Values, Vision, Validation wrapped in two-to-three lines. A short paragraph that is not static but alive; a declaration signifying how you choose to grow and nurture life. It is as simple as that. By-the-way, you will discover that in creating the paragraph that will be the foundation for your life purpose statement, you'll sense a feeling of peace in knowing what many people long for - a sense of meaning and purpose. You'll recognize that you have just progressed through an adventure of self-discovery. And, yes, you will have internalized life principles that give meaning and purpose to your journey. On a previous page you read "...a Mission Statement is much more than a mantle piece. It ought to represent who you are, aligning with your life experiences, expectations, goals, dreams. It is no different than a business or corporate Mission Statement. Each is created to identify what the person or enterprise stands for. Each outlines what is important, valued; what will not be compromised. In essence, whether an enterprise or a person, a mission statement reflects the very essence of being. A mission statement outlines core values, purpose, vision. It gives substance to those principles that will not be compromised. It creates a visual map for the journey." An example of a Personal Statement is "I cherish life as an adventure gifted from God. As I journey through each day, I purpose to accept my faults, to forgive, to forget. I desire to be honourable, to be teachable, to be understanding, to be inspiring." Clear. Concise. Captivating - at least to the one who wrote it. Stephen Covey wrote on his blog, "Writing a mission statement can be the most important activity an individual can take to truly lead ones life...personal mission statements based on correct principles are like a personal constitution, the basis for making major, life-directing decisions, the basis for making daily decisions in the midst of the circumstances and emotions that affect our lives." In the words of Peg McDermott, "A mission statement is a written-down reason for being." It's as simple as that - a written down reason for being. Now it is your time. No matter where you are today, everyone starts with a clean sheet of paper. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, and every day after that is a new day, a new beginning, a new opportunity to grow into the person, the life, you desire. But you need to start. Find a quiet area. Don't rush to complete it in one sitting. But do start - today. To receive a completed sample statement to use as a model, click on the link below for a FREE copy.
